1. Remove Old Frame And Trim. Removing the old frame may take you over an hour. Around the trim, score the caulking. Then, use a pry bar to pry it open. Prying will aid in the removal of the frame without causing damage to the wall. Set aside the trim for later installation, noting down as needed to assist you remember where each piece fits.

2. Square The Opening. You'll need a carpenter square and a long level for this step. Use these tools to make sure your opening is square; otherwise, your door might not close or align properly.

3. Install New Frame. Erect the new frame, leveling the door with as many shims as needed. Ensure that the jambs are flush against the wall. Nail through the frame and shims into the studs, just enough to hold the frame in place. At this stage, double-check the door to make sure it works properly.

4. Finish Securing The Frame. Once you're sure everything is leveled, aligned, opening and closing properly, attach the frame permanently. With a box cutter or a wood chisel, remove any exposed shims.

Lastly, you can replace the trim (or cut and install a new trim, if your project requires it).
